ArcView® 8.x Tutorials

Three tutorials have been developed to show how ArcView 8.x software can be used with the spatial data provided in the Northern Puget Sound Ecological Characterization (NPSEC). The tutorials can be applied to the NPSEC GIS to address various environmental and resource management objectives, or other user needs. Note that detailed discussions of these topics can also be found in the Help menu of your ArcView software. To use these tutorials, you must have ArcView 8.x installed on your computer.

Querying Layers
This tutorial demonstrates how to examine spatial data using the Identify and Find features of ArcView 8.x as well as how to measure distances and query data layers based on attributes and location.

Retrieving GIS Data from the Internet
This tutorial describes how to access and retrieve spatial data from the Washington State Geospatial Clearinghouse Internet site. More specifically, this tutorial explains how to download, unzip, and convert an Interchange (.e00) file to an ArcInfo® Coverage for use in ArcView 8.x.

Projecting Data
This tutorial explains how to format data downloaded from the previous exercise so that they can be projected in ArcView 8.x, as well as how to project the data. More specifically, it describes how to convert an ArcInfo® Coverage to an ESRI® Shapefile (both are common spatial data formats) and how to project the Shapefile into a coordinate system that matches that of the NPSEC GIS data layers.
