Interstate 5 runs north and south through Whatcom and Skagit Counties. In Skagit County, Highway 20 (Scenic North Cascades Highway) runs east and west; and Highway 9 is a nice inland, north-south alternative.

Ferries: The Washington State Ferry System runs ferries from Anacortes to the San Juan Islands and Vancouver Island, B.C. The Guemes Island Ferry, run by Skagit County, operates a regular daily schedule.
